Gary Gygax, God Speed

I found myself at Pegasus Games (the shop Pegasaurus Games in Dork Tower is based on) last night.

It's been a while since I was back there. Too long, in fact.

I was sort of surprised that the store was open as late as it was, as I drove past it. So I stopped in to say "hi" to Suzanne.

I picked up a Swear Bear, and the new edition of Talisman, and realized I was pretty darned charged about getting this. In fact, it's been a while since I've been this excited to buy a game.

Wandering around the store, I noticed a bunch of kids in the back room, playing games.

They were high school age, mostly: a few seemed older; a few seemed younger. There were some geeks and nerds, some who seemed the type who'd be social outcasts in school, and some who didn't.

But they all had a place to come, and play with pals, and lose themselves in their many worlds.

I got back to the front of the store, and said "hi" to some more people I hadn't seen in too long.

"You heard about Gary Gygax?" they asked.

"Yeah." I said. And I looked around.

I saw shelves and shelves of roleplaying games like D&D, GURPS and Vampire, card games like Magic and Munchkin, miniatures games like Warhammer, just dozens and dozens - hundreds, in fact - of games, toys, dice, gamer comic books, gamer collectibles, you name it.

"You know," I said, to nobody in particular. "If it hadn't been for Gary and Dave (Arneson), none of this would probably be here."

"Hmmm," said Suzanne, behind the counter.

Oh, sure, there'd be some wargames and such. Historical miniatures. But nearly everything else...almost the entire hobby games field...it pretty much all sprang directly or indirectly from those first books. To say nothing of the multi-billion video game industry.

I'd held off doing a tribute cartoon yesterday, since I didn't have a really good idea of what to say, or how to say it. All I could think to do was change the colors of the Dork Tower website to black, take down the advertising, and go into mourning, for a bit. Probably cliched, yes, but it felt right.

But then, that moment at Pegasus Games, seeing the kids in the back, laughing their heads off, and having a great time, I knew exactly what I wanted to say.

Thanks, Dave and Gary. Thanks for pretty much all of what my life's now about.

And Gary...

...God speed.

I like the look of the website. It's appropriate, and the comic is fitting. Reminds me of Gen Con, which is spot on.

Superb work, John. This actually brought tears to my eyes, for the first time since I hear the news about Gygax's death.

I love the benevolent god look of Gygax, encompassing his creations & spiritual heirs, like a Dork Towerised version of Blake's Urizen.

Beautiful, indeed.

I admit I'm not a gamer ... I haven't gamed in many years. But I was when I was a kid in my formative years, and those D&D sessions turned out to have a huge influence on the person I became.

I miss the store I used to game at when I was a teenager. It closed down just before I graduated from highschool. Almost as if telling me "alright, I helped you along this far, now it's time for you to do it yourself."

I haven't played D&D itself in almost 10 years. I've moved on to other games, but I've never forgotten about it. This weekend I'm going to dust off the books, and get my geek on with some friends.

That was very well-put, John. It's got me tearing up now, thinking about how much Gary's legacy has affected my life.

I think the contributions of Gary Gygax are ones that future generations may not fully grasp the significance of but will benefit from all the same. Thanks to him I have a shelf full of boardgames, books and dice that I otherwise would never have owned. Just trying to imagine the joy that man has brought to my life through Dungeons & Dragons, Role Playing Games and Dragonlance is astounding. You know yesterday I had this overwhelming urge to go to the Frugal Muse on Mineral Point and D'Onofrio just to buy an old vintage paperback set of The Dragonlance Chronicles. When I got home I saw the news and found myself tearing up.

Along with Ralph Baer I think no other man has made such an impact on my life or left such a lasting impression and I think your tribute to him is absolutely beautiful in every possible way.

Any thought to putting that on a black T-shirt? Proceeds to go to a charity. I think everyone going to Gencon this year would get one.

We've only met a few times at Origins, so I wouldn't expect you to know who I am.

After hearing the news yesterday, I went into the offices of the Ohio Gamers Organization this morning before heading to work to drop off my share of the office rent and to ask my fellow workers in the OGO if we could do some sort of event in Gary's memory. After speaking with the director Jack on the phone, I went online to find more information. And that's when I found your latest work.

Looking at it, and thinking about how much he impacted gaming, and how much gaming impacted all of us... I cried. All those games and comics I have, currently packed up as I prepare to move, I thought about how the work of Gary and his friends made it possible. I thought about all the games I've played and the people I've shared them with, the conventions I've visited, and yes, the gaming comics I've read. Not just on the table, but on consoles and home computers. Fighting strange monsters in Dragon Quest, finding magical weapons in Final Fantasy, building my characters in Knights of the Old Republic, and even choosing classes in Team Fortress. So much, just so much the man helped make possible

Perhaps I have little place asking this, but I must request that you please make this a poster, and that you please send copies to game retailers worldwide. This is perhaps the single most touching tribute to the man I've seen. Thank you, John.

...I'm crying again.

i suspect this usage was derived from (or at least refers to) the old irish blessing, "may you be in heaven a full half hour before the devil knows you're dead."

i could well be wrong, though. i've heard it used for other than the dead, simply wishing swiftness on the person's journey.

Pandemonium Books in Cambridge is having a memorial celebration for Gygax tomorrow (Saturday the 8th). This is the best of the cartoons I've seen on this, and most representative of the community getting together to celebrate *being* a community because of what he started. Would you mind if I used this to tell people? It would just be a printout of it, for posting by the register, with the date and time.
