Breaking Radio Silence
Things have been quiet on the Casa De Muskrat Interwebs, for some good reasons (and a few less good, but there you go).

Judith and I celebrated our 12th wedding anniversary this past weekend, with a short trip to Kohler, WI. It's an odd little holiday town, and pleasant as all get-out. Few cities in the world can claim to be top-flight resorts, built with the riches only the bathroom plumbing supply industry can accumulate.

Yes, Kohler is the home of Kohler Kicthen and Bath, But Mostly Bath, Inc. Judith uncovered a bargain stay at the usually exclusive American Club, and -- for a short time, anyway -- we lived like kings. Or at least Toilet Magnates. Which is better than Refrigerator Magnates any day.

Anyway, upon returning to Muskrat Central, I leapt right into a full-day Out of the Box meeting. It was exhausting, but as always somewhat exhilarating. It looks like OTB will be producing another game I designed: a party game that's been playtesting shockingly well. I'll run it by a few more local groups before seeking outside playtesters. But, fingers crossed, I think this has the potential to go really well. The concept is simple, the rules are straightforward, and I'm not sure anything like it has quite been done before.

In the mean time, after two brilliant weekend concerts in a row (Kids in the Hall and Jonathan Coulton (who's just a terrific guy, by the way, on top of being embarasingly talented)), we've got a third show, this Sunday.

I utterly surprised the Lovely and Talented Judith on our anniversary, getting her Flight of the Conchords tickets for their Milwaukee show. She had no idea they were on tour, let alone they would be so close to home.

Actually scoring the tickets meant getting on a special mailing list that then gave you a secret password to let you bribe your way onto a web site that let you press buttons frantically at noon the day before tickets went on sale to the general public. Get yourself a ticket, go through the gate. At seven forty-five precisely, don't be late If anybody follows don't hesitate: Keep on walking.

The show sold out in some insanely short period of time, so although our seats aren't the best in the house, I'm just glad we'll be there. And Judith is over the moon.

Now to see how many Conchords fans think I'm somehow related to Jemaine, come Sunday.

Awesome!

We're thinking of getting in early, for dinner at The King And I, for old Gen-Con time's sake...

Holy cats, John! When I first scrolled past this entry I honestly thought that was a picture of you from some bygone day (though I thought, "Man! John sure was scowly back then!").

VERY jealous ... AGAIN. I'd love to see the Conchords live. And this weekend I don't have any counter programming here in San Diego. :^/

Wouldn't Toilet Magnates always be falling onto the floor, toilets being generally more ceramic than ferrous?

Wow!! Good on you! I'm so very jealous, I only discovered FotC half a year or so ago (not that I think they've ever been or aired over here), and I'd love to see them.
(And yes, now that you mentioned it -- that resemblance is slightly uncanny :))

My mom grew up near Kohler. You should go there sometime for the Fourth of July. A little over-patriotic maybe, but awesome brass bands and fireworks.

Judith commented that Christmas at the American Club must be spectacular.

What an excellent list of concerts and to-dos! Why, it would be enough to make me comment approvingly on our similar tastes... you know, if I weren't already here because I like your own creative output and stuff.

I'll be at Flight of the Conchords myself, on the far edge of the third row. So if we spot one another at this show we can muster our courage, break through that British/Midwestern reserved tendency, and smile uncertainly at one another! Yay! :D

Oh, MAN, though...third row!

I was on the theater's website the moment it opened, and only got second-row balcony.

Of course, i was going for four tickets. But still...how'd you get such great seats?

And yes, If I see you, I'll prod you. Politely. In an unassuming English/Midwestern kinda way.

I sniped the early pre-sale, too. But I have found in the last year or so that by relinquishing the assumption that I have to see shows with someone, I end up with better seats. And I'm slowly coming round to the certainty that I'd rather see Evita or Kids in the Hall or Flight of the Conchords from right up front by myself than from the back row with a friend who might not value the show as much as I do.

So my secret trick is being single. You get a much wider range of seating options. I'm sorry that this is an unreasonable trick to replicate. If I had twelve years with a Lovely and Talented someone of my own I believe I'd find it a more than equitable tradeoff. :)

Aha!

I did that with Aimee Man tickets - Judith didn't want to go, so I picked up a single ticket late, and found a great seat.

Unfortunately, I had to get six tickets for Judith, myself, and four more friends who are raving FoTC fans.

Congrats. I'll look down on you with much jealousy.

And I promise I won't spit. :-)
