****

Spent much of yesterday doing some unique cards for various European Munchkin sets.

Here are some from the German set of Munchkin 6:

Nationalelf and Zerschmetterling.

Meisterliche Truhe and Teleskopsandalen.

And my favorites (well, because they're Cthulhu, duh), from the Dutch version of Munchkin Cthulhu 2:

Verwilderd and Afbeelding.

The rest of the day was spent at the gym, hurting myself very much. I mean, "getting into shape."

The illustrations are cute, but what are they for? (I speak a little German, so I might actually get the puns...)

Fair enough.

"National Elf" refers to the national eleven, which mean the national soccer team.

"Zerschmetterling" is pun on butterfly (schmetterling) and destroy (zerschmettern)

"Meisterliche Truhe" lit Masterly Trunk....possible a PTerry reference

"Teleskopsandalen" lit Telescopic Sandals...Must be something German...

"Verwilderd" lit "gone wild" although I would translated it with "bewildered".
It's a pun on Geert Wilders.

"Afbeelding" lit "Image".... The title will be "Inburgeringscursus" (Citizenship-Preparation Course)
Here Cthulhu is dressed as the Polder Model from Munchkin 2 (Dutch version) as he tries to complete his Citizenship-Preparation Course.

"National Elf" = Ah, a cultural rather than linguistic reference. That's why I didn't get it.

"Zerschmetterling" = I read "zerschmettern" as meaning more "smash" or "shatter", which makes sense with the hammer. I guess "destroy" is a close cognate, though...

The other two I didn't get, either... again, must be cultural references...

You are correct on http://www.woxikon.com/wort/zerschmettern.php

The "Zerschmetterling" could be translated with "Shatterfly" (instead of butterfly) to keep its meaning.

As already said, the "Nationalelf" is a play with words as "Elf" could be both the mystic race and the number "eleven" in german.

The trunk is clearly a reference to good old Terry Pratchet.

The "Teleskopsandalen" (telescopic sandals) have no real reference. They are just a generic item. I have to know that, cause they were my idea that I submitted. Had the feeling that there were pretty few footwear compared to headgear or armor. So I had this idea of a munchkin running on retractable stilts.

Very nice job on all the cards.

Well, apparently it's quite funny.

It's really the first meme I haven't gotten. I feel like this is an important milestone for me. Like Matt, I'm just too young to be too old for the Internet.

You're never too young to be too old when something is just plain Not Funny.

I was convinced the single panel link was going to be a rickroll until I did the mouseover check. Even then, there was a slight delay in the page load at gamespy, so I thought it was a redirect.

But, irrationally, I think rickrolling is amusing, even if I don't do it myself. I only vaguely "get it."

I thought of adding a Rickrolled link in the addenda.

Then I came to my senses...

How does the European Munchkin compare to American Munchkin?

What are the kind of jokes you look for?

For the Dutch edition I try to think of something funny for our Dutch audience.
I then try to add an appropriate rule and image.
If PS Games rejects the concept, or Steve rejects the rule or John rejects the image proposal it's back to the drawing board.

Both the images John has made for the Cthulhu sets refer to current politics.
Of the images Goomi made for us, one is about the IRS and one refers to a Dutch song.

If it makes Matt feel any better, I have no idea what Rickrolled really is either... I mean, I know what it is, but I don't know why it is the way it is.

Mainstream news is picking up on rickrolling.

This means that, as an internet phenomenon, it is basically dead. There'll be some death throes, I guess, but I expect the cool kids to move on soon (if they haven't already).

Both of the German Muchkin cards made be laugh out loud in a very quiet office. I've just had to explain why they are funny, which is much harder for an English-speaking--only audience!

Why o why didn't anyone come up with Nationalelf before? Now that it's there, it seems so obvious!! (Think LotR Legolas craze.)
Brilliant, John!!

I had never heard of Rickrolling before (despite spending hours online every day) -- feel slightly enlightened after reading the wikipedia article, but can't say I quite get it yet. :)
