Muskrat Ramblings for Now People

Wednesday Morning Ramblings @ 09:47 am

Current Location: Muskrat Central
Current Music: "Challengers" - The New Pornographers

Today's Dork Tower is up...

to see it. (The basic idea came about when I was skimming through Miss Sara's MySpace blog last night.

I wasn't happy with the drawing I did for Dork Tower, last Friday. So I redid it:

If you're not gonna get paid for a cartoon ONCE, you might as well not get paid for a cartoon twice. And if you're gonna do the stupidest joke of your career, you might as well like the damn drawing.

Here...

...is a link to the original.

****

To those of you lucky enough to be going to the Origins Game Fair this weekend: damn, I wish I was there.

Instead, here's a drawing I did for the annual Kobolds Ate My Baby Midnight Massacre event.

Wanna guess what the theme is?

The Midnight Massacre, run by those insane geniuses at 9th Level Games, is a hoot. Try and make it there, if you can. (I forget whether it runs Friday or Saturday, but I believe it's Friday.)

****

I've read three books so far this year on gaming. All have been just terrific.

I've already talked about "Achtung, Schweinhund." I'll be posting on the thoroughly enjoyable "The Elfish Gene" soon.

The third book was kindly sent to me by jonnynexus, its author: "Game Night."

I read it over the last weekend I was in England, although it was actually sent to me last winter. I wish I hadn't waited so long. I also wish I'd brought it with me to Warpcon, where the inimitable author was, to get it signed.

Well, if you're in the Reading area this weekend (of England - hush, you Pennsylvanians), you can do one better than me and pick up a copy and have J.N. sign it for you! Just pop by Eclectic Games, which I hear is a rather excellent shop that's moving to a new, larger site adjacent to their current location. The opening day is this Saturday, 28th June, when the author will start signing away from about 10 am onwards.

So if you're near Reading, it would behoove you to hit Eclectic Games, grab a copy of this Pratchett-esque debut novel of gods, roleplaying, and game-night kerfuffles. Plus, Jonny's a hoopy frood who really knows where his towel is.

Eclectic Games is located just opposite the railway station (hopefully, this link opens to a map).

Reading
RG1 1LX

So, yeah - buy "Game Night." Get it signed. It's a fun, fresh, irreverent read that'll ring true to any gamer even if, unlike the protagonists, you happen not to be a god.

Chapter one is available as a free preview download. With luck, clicking on that there link should procure it for you.

****

I always seemed to enjoy the idea of The New Pornographers more than the actual New Pornographers themselves, but I must admit, the new album, "Challengers," is getting steady rotation on my iTunes, along with REM's "Accelerate" and Aimee Mann's "@#%&*! Smilers."

Just picked up The Apples in Stereo's "New Magnetic Wonder," which is good, but hasn't blown me away yet.

The Apples in Stereo fans: which albums are their Must-hears?

****

Holy cow...ANOTHER "You Can't Say That Up Here, Mr. Carlin" gag...

I love this, though: two cartoonists who seem to at least know that Carlin was more than just Seven Words You Can't Say on Television:

I find myself agreeing with Igor.

I'm frightened.

Make mine rare, please. No, no ... I said rare!

"Star Kobold," actually.

Will these drawings be available anywhere else?

With luck, yes.

Plus, when I have time, I'll post larger versions of each here...

I've only got _New Magnetic Wonder_, too, and likewise wasn't blown away -- though I enjoyed the logarithmic songs.

Give my love to TL&T Judith, and your adora-bubble kittehs. I wish I had more free time so I could proof more projects! That really was such a fun time for me (what was that, 2005 I think? Mebbe 2004?) Where *does* the time go...!

Okay, that last one was the first actually funny and clever one I've seen.

See, now, if I were an editorial cartoonist, I'd have God and the Devil at the Pearly Gates, saying, "Oh, a foul-mouthed atheist who mocked authority! We have a PLACE for people like you," and a second panel with a series of humongous thrones with angels with trumpets all around them, with folks like Lenny Bruce and Richard Pryor sitting in them being tended hand-and-foot.

totally.

Considering that he was inspired by Bruce and helped pave the way for Pryor, it'd be fitting.

Hi John,

Thanks hugely for the mention. I really appreciate it, and as a big admirer of your work, it's really cool to hear that you enjoyed it. I wish I could think of something stylish and witty to say in addition, but I can't think of anything.

So I'm just going to print out your post instead so I can go home and show it to my wife.

Thanks,

Jonny

The pleasure really is mine. I hope you don't mind, but I've made a quote out of what you said and put it up on the Game Night website. I've condensed it a bit, but hopefully not in a "theatre poster" kind of way. And it's got a link to the original post.

Also, and I feel horribly nitpicky to be saying it, but the link to my lj is broken. (It's "jonnynexus" not "johnnynexus").

Anyhow, thanks again.

I like the "stuff" cartoon.

And, personally, if Heaven is relative to the person, then a George Carlin heaven means being able to use any word he wanted. Hell would mean being limited to the 1st grader's dictionary.

I'm glad John pointed that out so I could go read the post the inspired it! That was both well said and very funny.

I will stand behind a persons right to be a vegetarian, vegan, or any other personal stance they wish to take. I will not stand behind them when they decide that I should do as they are doing. In fact at that point I'll stand in front of them ... eating fried chicken and very rare burgers and drooling happily until they go away.

As a hindu and a vegetarian, i can't help but think that life in india would be much cleaner, if not better, if we had just thrown the buddha out instead of implementing his policy of non-violence to all things. But we didn't, and here I sit 3000 years later, a vegetarian.

So eating burgers can now be considered a carbon-offset...neat-o!

And one of your kobold drawings makes me wonder: Do tribbles taste like chicken?

Mostly, I liked the expression on the face of the "wolf" in the last panel in the first version. It was more "You've gotta be kidding me", where the second one seems more "WTF?" Now maybe you were going for "WTF?", but...

Enh, it doesn't matter. It's a funny cartoon, no matter what. Thank you.

"If you're not gonna get paid for a cartoon ONCE, you might as well not get paid for a cartoon twice."

Have you considered putting a paypal tip jar on the site? Or Ransoming the next Dork Tower using www.Fundable.com? It works for Dennis Detwiller and Greg Stolze.

Reminded me of that old joke: Save some trees, kill a beaver!

For the full double-entendre, I believe it's "Save a tree - Eat a beaver."

Re: Bad animals

Agreed. I just had a try translating the German version, I knew. Actually I knew it as "Save the trees, kill the beavers." But killing animals without eating them is even worse than letting cows eat all the crops.
