Get Out the Idiot Vote.
A lot of my friends in the USA friends are posting things like, "If you don't plan to vote today, PLEASE vote. Every vote is important. Just vote."

I say the hell with that.

If you're not planning on voting today, and if you haven't already voted, keep your lazy ass at home.

If you do vote, you'll probably just ruin it for the rest of us.

I mean, seriously. Stay the fuck away from the voting booth. If the last eight years aren't enough to get you to vote, just what the fuck will? I mean, really. Are you waiting for nuns being gang-raped on a daily basis on every street corner or something? Panda fondling by public officials?

Back away from that ballot slowly. Pick up that bag of Chee-tos, slowly, slooooowly, and sit back down in front of that "Adult Swim" marathon or something.

If you're not planning to vote today, don't.

You'd probably just vote for some asshat.

I've got a daughter now. I don't want you fucking the world up for her.

It's nice to hear someone say it.

It sucks when someone votes against what you believe in.

It sucks even more when they don't even know what they're voting for.

An uninformed vote can be just as bad as no vote.

The local radio station posed this question this morning: "Which is worse, someone who doesn't vote, or someone who votes uninformed?"

Also? If you think you want to vote, but you're still unsure who you're going to vote for, there are still a few hours left to READ UP.

Would be nice if they still distributed voter's guides. I used to bring that with me and consult it when I voted on the smaller races.

Gah - one of my coworkers actually said during the primary "It's such a pain - I mean, if you don't get there by 5 it's like it doesn't count, because it's already on the news!"

I patiently explained to her how things work, all the while thinking "please go ahead and stay away from the polls, cuz you're clearly too stupid to be trusted with a vote anyway!"

Just because someone has the RIGHT to vote does not mean they SHOULD vote.

I'd say that the real problem is *misinformed* voters -- you know, the ones that think "socialism" means "progressive income tax." "Joe the Plumber" is, as far as I can tell, the absolute embodiment of this voter. He has said some of the dumbest, most misinformed shit I've ever heard someone say on TV when he knew cameras were recording. :)

When it comes down to it, though, the point we should be making isn't "Don't vote if you're uninformed," it's "Get informed, THEN vote."

One of the benefits of political parties is that it doesn't take *that* much to be somewhat informed (i.e. it's a "cognitive shortcut"); if you decide you like one party's platform more than the other, you can vote straight ticket and you know you're probably picking the candidates that best represent your beliefs. And, really, how much effort does it take to learn the difference between Democrats and Republicans?

(Yes, I know that parties are an oversimplification, but we can't expect everyone out there to be a policy wonk like me -- they have stuff to do.)

Now, if you're so ambivalent that you don't favor one party over the other AND you're uninformed on an issue-by-issue basis -- well, then, fuck off and don't mess up our election. :)

p.s. And, for the record, this political scientist watches [adult swim]!

I have to chime in and agree as well. I just saw examples of people who are still mystified on how to get the necessary information on ballot options, yet are apparently savvy enough to use the Internet or Twitter. What, is Netnanny screening out Google? Were you unable, during the last 8 years, to do a basic search of the topics that might be important to you? Was the discussion absent from the news, or your friends' journals? I mean, don't you even watch The Daily Show?
