JVL-Con an', like, stuff...
Not only did I miss GenCon and Origins this year, I missed JVL-Con, in Janesville, WI, just down the road.

Apparently, MSNBC didn't.

JVL-Con made Keith Olbernann's countdown, which impresses the heck out of me!

'Countdown with Keith Olbermann' for Aug. 23
Updated: 10:22 a.m. ET Aug. 24, 2005
Guests: Bob Edgar, Mike Wise, Jose Avila
KEITH OLBERMANN, HOST:
Number two, the folks at the Ramada Inn in Janesville, Wisconsin.
They saw a guy in some sort of military-like outfit carrying an
unusual weapon, wearing something that looked like bulletproof armor.
So they called the cops. They said there was an armed robbery in
progress. Actually, the marquee on the hotel could have told them it
was a "Star Trek" convention˜"Star Wars" convention, and the robber
was a guy dressed up as a Galactic Empire storm trooper.

****

Note on yesterday's Stalking Cat post:

I'm sure he's a nice guy. I'm sure he's a GREAT guy. Salt of the earth.

But it still totally freaks me out.

And it takes a lot to freak me out at this point in my fandom.

*****

Adding to the slightly disturbing feeling, Elvis Costello's "Pads, Paws and Claws" has just come up on my iTunes rotation.

****

I'm trying to cut down on memes (I suppose a better phrase would be "lemmings," or "lememes," or something, since what's known as "memes" in blogland aren't really memes in the dictionary sense of the word. But anyhoo...)

Since this one is based on the superb "Robin's Laws of Good Game Mastering," however, I take pleasure in this exception.

You scored as Storyteller. You're more inclined toward the role playing side of the equation and less interested in numbers or experience points. You're quick to compromise if you can help move the story forward, and get bored when the game slows down for a long planning session. You want to play out a story that moves like it's orchestrated by a skilled novelist or film director.

It's funny how word usage changes so much more quickly in this information age than it did even 50 years ago.

n. A unit of cultural information, such as a cultural practice or idea, that is transmitted verbally or by repeated action from one mind to another. (from your link)

My guess as to why these quizzes and other goodies have gotten called "memes" in blogland is that they seem to propigate from one blog to another/many, sometimes as rapidly-seeming as bacteria. But you're totally right, the word "meme" really refers to a concept that propigates, not the taking of some cute quiz. :)

Of course he freaks you out.

He freaks ANY human being with any sense of sanity and rationale out.

That's why he's with the FURRIES! They are the LAST RESORT fandom! They're the ones who take in those geeks who are so low on the ladder of social acceptance that NO OTHER form of geekdom would TAKE them!

They'd take frickin' Osama Bin Ladin if he put on a pair of fake cat ears. And every time someone complained about it, they'd rally behind their battle cry of "Fursecution!" and claim all those who complained are "Worse than Nazis" and "They just hate him because he's a Furry"!

These are the people who were BEATEN UP by TREKKIES in HIGH-SCHOOL!

'Armed robber' was really a Stormtrooper at JVL-CON

By Danielle Letenyei
Gazette Staff

The Force wasn't with a Stormtrooper-clad attendee of the JVL-CON
science fiction convention on Friday at the Ramada Inn in Janesville.

Instead, it had him surrounded.

Janesville police got a surprise when they responded to a report of an armed robbery at the Ramada Inn, 3431 Milton Ave.

The
alleged suspect was dressed as a Stormtrooper, a soldier for the Galactic Empire in the science fiction movie series "Star Wars."

"Apparently some people who saw him felt there was a threat," said Sgt. Kay Nikolaus of the Janesville Police Department.

The Stormtrooper was really a vendor participating in the weekend
convention, held annually at the Ramada Inn, said Joann Lewandowski,
who lives with event organizer Ray Norton.

"It was kind of silly but kind of understandable," Lewandowski said.

Whoever called police must have missed the Ramada's marquee out front,
which announces the convention being held there, Lewandowski said.

The Stormtrooper got a warning from police-leave the plastic laser gun inside.

I don't know what's worse. That the reporter felt the need to clarify exactly what Star Wars was, or that this dumbass was stupid enough to show up in full costume to check in.

Hmm...I tied on Tactician, Storyteller, and Method Actor. I see myself as the first two, but not the third. Of course, I imagine most of the Pod People are tacticians to one extent or another.

And that convention story is just amusing...although I'm not sure which is worse - that the costume wasn't recognized, or that the fan was foolish enough to walk around with the gun, considering how jittery people still get.

*nod* Squicks me a little too. For some reason, whenever i see mention of him, i hear Jeanane Garofalo from The Truth About Cats and Dogs: "OK, now. Repeat after me. Us. Them. Us. Them"

I just wonder where his source of income is? To have $200K in cosmetic surgery that will likely make you unemployable in any case where you might need to ever possibly have something like a general-public-facing role just baffles me.

OK, so he wants to revive ancient Huron traditions. More power to him, but the last i checked, tigers weren't indigenous to anywhere the Hurons lived. What's more, the contacts are wrong- only domestic cats have the slit pupil- bigger cats don't.

Not that I want to be politically incorrect or anything, but -- in that picture, he actually looks pretty blond to me. How many blond Huron or Lakota tribe members were there? Or is it just bleaching/dye?
